Duties of Wardens
Cave conservation
The Warden escorts groups of non-warden cavers
into the cave in order to advise them how best to proceed in the cave in the
best interests of the cave environment.
Pre-trip declaration
The warden must ensure that the pre-trip
declaration form is completed including the names and insurance status of
each member of the party. All members of the party MUST have public
liability insurance cover under the BCA or DCA schemes.
Trip reports
The warden is required to return a report to
the secretary within one week of the trip. These are an important means of
highlighting conservation and safety issues, in addition to providing useful
management statistics on the numbers of visitors to different parts of the
cave.
Inform the party
The warden should ensure that all visiting
cavers are sufficiently informed about the nature of the trip ahead of them
so that each individual may decide if he/she has the competence to continue.
Party size
Careful consideration should be given to party
size, taking into account, factors such as speed of movement, experience of
the team members and the remoteness of the areas to be visited. Four is
often held to be a good number in a party.
